SOIBADA

Soibada Parochial School and Parish are known nationally for their educational excellence and, in their history, have educated many of the most successful Timorese, including both the current Prime Minister Ramos Horta and President Xamana. Soibada is also home to a sizable clinic, market and job opportunities on local improvement projects. Sadly, of Soibada’s 3,700 inhabitants, nearly 800 are stranded on the opposing side of the river. Those isolated on the other side of the river are not able to easily access these facilities and are at a great disadvantage during the rainy season when crossing is impossible. The extended rainy season in 2010 prolonged this isolation, creating fears that climate change may permanently create separation.
