Pena Blanca Suspended Pedestrian Footbridge Project Slide Show Bridge Sponsor: ND SEED – University of Notre Dame Local Community Sponsor: Municipality of La Campa PartnerDedication: Dr. David Kirkner Pedestrian Footbridge Type: Suspended Bridge Span: 40 meters/132 feet Population Served By Bridge: Approximately 100 people Bridge Story: The hardworking community of Pena Blanca had been warily crossing a dilapidated bridge made of barbed wire for nearly 30 years before getting the opportunity to construct a better bridge with a Bridges to Prosperity university team, ND SEED (Notre Dame Students Empowering through Engineering Development). The bridge was completed on June 6th 2009, just in time for the impending rainy season. The families of Pena Blanca no longer have to endure times when they can’t cross the river to the larger town of La Campa and to the markets of Gracias. Their horses can now cross the river with ease, and their children can safely and consistently get to school. It was a well-deserved bridge! The community has plans to construct a much smaller replica of the bridge further up the river using leftover cables and other supplies.
