La Hacienda Suspended Pedestrian Footbridge Project Slide Show Bridge Sponsor: The Rotary Clubs of Matthews and Dunn Loring Virginia and the Rotary Foundation Partners: Ayuda en Accion; Municipality of El Rosario; Community of La Hacienda de las Sabanas Bridge Name: La Hacienda Bridge Span: 33 meters / 108 feet Pedestrian Footbridge Type: Suspended Population Served by Bridge: 800 people Bridge Story: For too long members of the community of La Hacienda de las Sabanas have been crossing the river on a thin cable to get to and from their farmland on the other side of the river. When the river floods, which it does for more than 6 months of every year, they cannot cross at all. This means they can make only one harvest per year and must feed their family on the income of that harvest alone. Often, the men must leave their homes for the rainy months to seek work elsewhere, often they do not find what they are looking for and their families at home go hungry. This will happen no more. No more will the men be forced to leave their wives and children alone in the cold and rain. No more will the women have to squeeze every meal out of their meager stores of corn and grain. Now they will have a bridge they can cross year round. That means that year-round they can work their land, harvesting twice or more per year and providing amply for the children.
