University Programs: Bridges to Prosperity encourages university students to become involved in our community bridge building mission. There are several ways that university students can participate:
Join: Bridges to Prosperity member dues can help us with our mission. General Membership Application/Renewal

Donate: Funds raised by you and your friends can be used to dedicate a bridge or sponsor a bridge project. Details on bridge dedication and sponsorship can be found on the Membership Form.

Volunteer: Volunteer opportunities exist for individuals or groups of students, who would then work in-country with community members to build their bridge. Volunteers must self fund these trips and a minimum stay of 3 weeks is required.

Additional information about these opportunities can be found on our Volunteers page.

Student Teams: University teams can design/build a bridge for a community as a senior design or service-learning project. A team of students from the University of Iowa completed the Yabina y Colpa Bridge in the Andes of Peru in summer 2008. Visit their website to see the results on the Continental Crossings website.

The 2009 University Program team is from Notre Dame ND SEED (Notre Dame Students Empowering through Engineering Development). Team members include Rafael Deheza, Anna Lacey, Patrick McHugh, Sean McNichols, Katie Sushinsky and Jessica Winschel. ND SEED's main goal is to empower a rural Honduran community by providing it with a footbridge. The team will be traveling to Pena Blanca in November 2008 to survey the roughly 35 meter crossing and will return summer 2009 for bridge construction. For more information, visit their website Notre Dame ND Seed.

We work with Engineers Without Borders Chapter Projects, Senior Design and service-learning project teams, and any are open to any other student teams with individual interest. We are able to provide selected University Program teams with a bridge site, local contacts and logistical support in addition to design assistance offered to any student-led teams.

A paper was presented at the 2009 annual conference for the American Society for Engineering Education entitled International Service Learning Projects for Senior Capstone Projects by Scott Reichle, Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering Technology at Old Dominion University. The paper was the work of three authors consisting of Professor Reichle, Avery Bang, Director of Operations for Bridges to Prosperity, and Professor Carol Considine, who is the Civil Engineering Technology Program Director and Associate Professor of Engineering Technology at Old Dominion University. Read the paper at "International Service-Learning Projects for Senior Capstone Projects".

Interns: Self-funded university intern positions are available for rising engineering seniors and graduates who wish to train with our in-country directors for 3 months or more.
